Treatment of prolymphocytic leukemia.

Prolymphocytic leukemia is characterized by marked splenomegaly, distinctive cellular morphologic characteristics, and a poor clinical course. Five patients with typical PL were treated systematically with vincristine/prednisone, chlorambucil/prednisone, splenic irradiation, splenectomy, and other chemotherapy regimens. No patient responded to vincristine/prednisone. Two patients responded to c...

Cost-effectiveness of alemtuzumab for T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alemtuzumab (CAMPATH-1H) compared with conventional chemotherapy in people with T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL). METHODS We developed a decision-analytic model to assess the costs and benefits of alemtuzumab or conventional therapy based on their effects on quality of life of patients. The main outcome was the i...

T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia with a suppressor phenotype.

A diagnosis of prolymphocytic leukemia was made from the blood and bone marrow of a 50 year old man. The neoplastic cells were studied by use of light and electron microscopy. Neoplastic cells were focally positive for acid phosphatase and alpha naphthyl acetate esterase. In addition, neoplastic cells formed rosettes with sheep erythrocytes and reacted with Leu-1 and Leu-2a but not Leu-3a antis...

Cytogenetic studies on prolymphocytic leukemia. II. T cell prolymphocytic leukemia.

We report chromosome abnormalities in 15 cases of T cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL). All cases were characterized by clinical, morphological, and membrane marker analysis. The most frequent abnormality was an inv(14)(q11q32) observed in nine cases. The T cell receptor (TCR) alpha chain gene is localized to 14q11 and the immunoglobulin heavy-chain gene to region 14q32. Four cases also had t...

Rhodococcus equi Infection after Alemtuzumab Therapy for T-cell Prolymphocytic Leukemia

Rhodococcus equi, mainly known from veterinary medicine as a pathogen in domestic animals, can also cause infections in immunocompromised humans, especially in those with defects in cellular immunity. Alemtuzumab, an anti-CD52 monoclonal antibody, causes lymphocytopenia by eliminating CD52-positive cells. We report a patient in whom Rhodococcus equi infection developed after alemtuzumab therapy.
